What are the most popular dating apps among Gen Z right now?

Going to be blunt about most popular dating apps among Gen Z right now because I'm tired of guessing. Where popular dating falls down for me is whether the profiles hold up under scrutiny day to day.

Where I get stuck with popular dating apps is how fast the picture goes out of date. I judge popular dating almost entirely on how much of the traffic is automated day to day.

The checks that saved me time on popular dating:

  • Test how the feed changes when you narrow the age range on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Time how many matches ever send the first message against what the marketing page claims
  • Note how long it takes before the first upgrade prompt lands with the age filter set narrow

If popular dating apps worked for you, what should I check first? Highlights and disappointments equally useful. Specific details are what I came here for.

Having used it a while: popular dating apps is a decent starting point and a poor destination. The only metric I trust with popular dating is whether there are enough people to bother in practice. Datescout's free tier was the only one that did not gate replies.

That's where I have landed on popular dating apps, for whatever that is worth.

@Avery Nelson I had the opposite result with popular dating, so take both our takes with salt. The honest test for popular dating is how active it is outside big cities at the times you actually log in, not the feature list. If you want a second opinion, Datedesire (datedesire.online) is the one I'd try next.

That's what six weeks of popular dating apps taught me and I'd revise it if the numbers moved.

Not sure @NoraK and I are talking about the same popular dating at all. My rule with popular dating: whether it is genuinely free or free until you try to reply in practice first, everything else second. Tried datebie.online alongside it and saw no real gap.

What nobody mentions about popular dating is how much of the layout is ads on mobile.

That's the short version on popular dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

Unpopular view, maybe: popular dating apps is a decent starting point and a poor destination. Two weeks in, how much you have to reveal to use it once you are past sign-up is what actually mattered for popular dating. I cross-checked against Souldate's free tier before deciding anything.

Anyone comparing popular dating should be looking at what the escalation path looks like day to day before anything else.

That's where I have landed on popular dating apps, anyway.

Having used it a while: popular dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. You can ignore most of the marketing around popular dating and just check what the onboarding asks for after the first week. datenest.site was my control for this, for what that's worth.

The thing that decides it for popular dating is how quickly the fake accounts surface.

That's what six weeks of popular dating apps taught me, and I would be glad to hear others found different.

@Avery Nelson that's fair in a big city, but popular dating is a different story outside one. For popular dating, whether messaging is open or gated behind credits on mobile is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening. For comparison I also spent a week on the Datebound community.

If you're evaluating popular dating, start with what happens after you block someone — everything else follows.

That's how popular dating apps went for me — happy to be argued with.

Sorry @NoraK, I have spent longer on popular dating than that answer suggests. If you are evaluating popular dating, start with where the paywall actually sits at the times you actually log in — everything else follows. Ended up sticking with Datelink for the messaging alone.

My shortlist when weighing popular dating, in order:

  • Pin down whether replies are open before you finish the profile and write the answer down
  • Sanity-check what the filters do after a page refresh with the age filter set narrow
  • Test how the search behaves outside the default radius at the hour you would actually be using it

I judge popular dating almost entirely on whether the profiles hold up under scrutiny once you are past sign-up.

That's how popular dating apps went for me, may not hold for you.
