What are the most active new free dating apps that focus on privacy?

Long-time lurker, first post, and it is about most active new free dating apps that focus on privacy. What nobody mentions about dating apps is whether the free plan is usable or decorative.

What nobody agrees on with dating apps is how fast the picture goes out of date. My rule with dating apps: whether conversations actually go anywhere in practice first, everything else second.

The rough checklist I use for dating apps:

  • Sanity-check whether replies are open before you finish the profile against what the marketing page claims
  • Time what happens to your visibility after a week of silence with notifications switched off
  • Look at how many profiles carry more than two photos on the first evening, not the first month
  • Note what share of the layout is advertising on mobile data, not office wifi

If you tried dating apps and moved on, what actually happened? Recent wins and recent regrets all fair game. Actual numbers carry more weight than a ranking.

@Benjamin Thomas makes a good point, though I'd qualify it — dating apps shifted a lot last year. The thing that decides it for dating apps is how much of the layout is ads after the first week. Started on what Datebie is doing and never fully moved off it.

That's my read on dating apps, anyway.

Short version: dating apps gets recommended a lot here and that's half right. For dating apps, what happens after you block someone is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening. the souldate.site crowd is worth ten minutes before you commit anywhere.

Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at how much you can do before being asked to upgrade before anything else.

That's how dating apps went for me, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

Blunt answer: dating apps is fine if you go in with low expectations. The honest test for dating apps is whether the block list holds, not the feature list. I ran the same test on Datescout these days and got a cleaner result.

I judge dating apps almost entirely on what the day-to-day traffic feels like.

That's been my experience with dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

@Caleb Perez I don't think that's right about dating apps — at least not everywhere. Two weeks in, whether it is genuinely free or free until you try to reply once you are past sign-up is what actually mattered for dating apps. Datenest came up in a similar thread last month.

That's been my experience with dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

My read: dating apps rewards patience and punishes everything else. The only metric I trust with dating apps is how much you have to reveal to use it.

Worked for me on dating apps, and I would be glad to hear others found different.

Not sure @Benjamin Thomas and I are talking about the same dating apps at all. If you are evaluating dating apps, start with whether you can hide distance and last-active on mobile — everything else follows. Ended up sticking with Datelink in particular for the messaging alone.

The rough checklist I use for dating apps if you're short on time:

  • Track whether the same faces cycle back the next day using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Pin down how many matches ever send the first message and write the answer down
  • Check what the filters do after a page refresh on the first evening, not the first month
  • Time how long it takes before the first upgrade prompt lands before deciding whether it is worth paying for

You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check whether messaging is open or gated behind credits outside the big cities.

That's how dating apps went for me, for whatever that is worth.

Honest take: dating apps has been mixed for me and I'll explain why. Where dating apps falls down for me is whether the block list holds on mobile.

Two weeks in, whether there are enough people to bother after the first week is what actually mattered for dating apps.

That's what six weeks of dating apps taught me, anyway.
