Is it worth downloading all the dating apps to increase your chances?

Every review site says something different about worth downloading all the dating apps to increase your chances. The only metric I trust with dating apps is what the reporting tools actually do in practice.

What makes dating apps hard to pin down is that it works differently by region, which is why I want firsthand accounts. Two weeks in, whether verification actually filters anyone after the first week is what actually mattered for dating apps.

Where I'd start with dating apps:

  • Note whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out and write the answer down
  • Look at how long it takes before the first upgrade prompt lands at the hour you would actually be using it
  • Test whether replies are open before you finish the profile and write the answer down
  • Note how the web version differs from the app twice, a week apart
  • Time whether last-active timestamps look plausible twice, a week apart

If you tried dating apps and moved on, how long before you knew? Good and bad all fair game. Recent write-ups are what I am actually after.

For what it's worth: dating apps is fine if you go in with low expectations. The thing that decides it for dating apps is whether moderation keeps up with the fakes on mobile. For comparison I also spent a week on the Datebie community.

The quick sanity pass I run on dating apps, in order:

  • Look at whether the same faces cycle back the next day using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Note how quickly a scripted account gives itself away on the first evening, not the first month

The honest test for dating apps is how many active users are within range after the first week, not the feature list.

That's the honest picture of dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

Not sure @JoshW and I are talking about the same dating apps at all. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check how aggressive the upsell gets once you are past sign-up.

Worked for me on dating apps, though clearly it varies by region.

Going to push back on @Ryan Moore here. Dating apps behaved very differently for me. What nobody mentions about dating apps is what you lose by never paying. I cross-checked against Datescout (datescout.site) before deciding anything.

I judge dating apps almost entirely on what the free tier really covers.

That's how dating apps went for me, for whatever that's worth.

@JoshW that matches the marketing for dating apps, not what I found using it. For dating apps, what you lose by never paying is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening. The closest thing I found to an honest free tier was Datedesire right now.

If you're evaluating dating apps, start with whether you can hide distance and last-active at the times you actually log in — everything else follows.

That's been my experience with dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

After a fair bit of testing: dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at what the day-to-day traffic feels like before anything else.

That's the honest picture of dating apps, though clearly it varies by region.

@LaylaB I had the opposite result with dating apps, so take both our takes with salt. My rule with dating apps: how thin it gets in smaller towns at the times you actually log in first, everything else second. Worth a look at Souldate these days if you want a second data point.

That's the honest picture of dating apps, for whatever that's worth.

Honest take: there's a version of dating apps that works, and it isn't the default one. Where dating apps falls down for me is whether it is genuinely free or free until you try to reply once you are past sign-up.

You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check whether the activity is real or recycled outside the big cities.

That's been my experience with dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.
