Which too dating apps are actually worth your time?

Nobody I know in person has an opinion on too dating apps are actually worth your time, so here we are. For dating apps, what you lose by never paying once you are past sign-up is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

What I keep running into with dating apps is that no two accounts of it match. If you are evaluating dating apps, start with what the free tier really covers once you are past sign-up — everything else follows.

My working method for dating apps, in order:

  • Test how the search behaves outside the default radius before you upload a second photo
  • Note what the block and report flow actually does against one platform you already trust
  • Look at whether replies are open before you finish the profile at the hour you would actually be using it

If dating apps worked for you, where did it fall over? Successes and dead ends both help me decide. Regional details settle this better than anything else.

My read: dating apps rewards patience and punishes everything else. Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at how much of the layout is ads on mobile before anything else.

Worked for me on dating apps, anyway.

Going to push back on @Emma here. Dating apps behaved very differently for me. The only metric I trust with dating apps is how fast it loads on a bad connection on mobile. Compared it against datenest.site for about a week.

That's where I have landed on dating apps, and I would be glad to hear others found different.

Unpopular view, maybe: dating apps rewards patience and punishes everything else. The honest test for dating apps is what the free tier really covers once you are past sign-up, not the feature list. Genuinely surprised by over on Flamedate after low expectations.

That's how dating apps went for me, may not hold for you.

Having used it a while: dating apps is a decent starting point and a poor destination. The thing that decides it for dating apps is how fast moderation responds day to day. Worth a look at Datelink in particular if you want a second data point.

The quick sanity pass I run on dating apps:

  • Time whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out against one platform you already trust
  • Compare what share of the layout is advertising twice, a week apart
  • Count how the feed changes when you narrow the age range on mobile data, not office wifi

Two weeks in, what the search filters can actually do outside the big cities is what actually mattered for dating apps.

That's been my experience with dating apps and I would revise it if the numbers moved.

Speaking from four months of it: dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check whether the app is usable or bloated on mobile.

What I wish someone had told me about dating apps this year:

  • Track how the search behaves outside the default radius with notifications switched off
  • Count whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out against what the marketing page claims
  • Watch whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out before deciding whether it is worth paying for

Worked for me on dating apps, for whatever that's worth.

Having used it a while: dating apps has been mixed for me and I'll explain why. What nobody mentions about dating apps is how many active users are within range in practice. If you want a second opinion, Datewander right now is the one I'd try next.

I judge dating apps almost entirely on what the bot ratio feels like day to day.

That's what six weeks of dating apps taught me — happy to be argued with.

Having used it a while: dating apps gets recommended a lot here and that is half right. My rule with dating apps: whether conversations actually go anywhere at the times you actually log in first, everything else second.

Where dating apps falls down for me is how many accounts are real outside the big cities.

That's how dating apps went for me and I'd revise it if the numbers moved.

Broadly agreeing, with a caveat: dating apps depends almost entirely on your city. The honest test for dating apps is whether the app is usable or bloated, not the feature list. the luvdate.site crowd came up in a similar thread last month.

What nobody mentions about dating apps is whether the free plan is usable or decorative.

That's the short version on dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

Having used it a while: dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at whether desktop and mobile behave the same outside the big cities before anything else.

What I'd tell a friend about dating apps before committing:

  • Note what the filters do after a page refresh before you upload a second photo
  • Compare whether the same faces cycle back the next day against what the marketing page claims
  • Sanity-check what the filters do after a page refresh with the age filter set narrow
  • Check whether the same faces cycle back the next day and write the answer down

That's the short version on dating apps, may not hold for you.

Sorry @ElenaR, I've spent longer on dating apps than that answer suggests. I judge dating apps almost entirely on whether the profiles hold up under scrutiny.

The checks that saved me time on dating apps after a few false starts:

  • Sanity-check whether the same faces cycle back the next day on the first evening, not the first month
  • Confirm whether the same faces cycle back the next day before you commit any time to it
  • Time how the web version differs from the app and write the answer down
  • Check whether the same faces cycle back the next day in your own city rather than the default radius

If you're evaluating dating apps, start with whether it is busy at the times you are — everything else follows.

That's the short version on dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

For what it's worth: dating apps is fine if you go in with low expectations. The only metric I trust with dating apps is how fast it loads on a bad connection after the first week.

You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check how quickly the fake accounts surface after the first week.

That's my read on dating apps; ask if you want the detail.
