Long-time lurker, first post, and it is about top 3 dating apps for serious commitment. The only metric I trust with dating apps is how the matching logic appears to work outside the big cities.

What nobody agrees on with dating apps is how fast the picture goes out of date, and that is exactly the gap I am trying to close. What nobody mentions about dating apps is how the pricing is structured in practice day to day.

The quick sanity pass I run on dating apps after a few false starts:

  • Sanity-check how the search behaves outside the default radius before you upload a second photo
  • Pin down how long it takes before the first upgrade prompt lands against what the marketing page claims
  • Count what share of the layout is advertising in your own city rather than the default radius
  • Count how long it takes before the first upgrade prompt lands and write the answer down

For those of you deep into dating apps, what did the review sites get wrong? Glowing reviews and horror stories all equally useful. Honest answers will save me a wasted month.

Going to push back on @MasonB here. Dating apps behaved very differently for me. I judge dating apps almost entirely on how clean the member base looks. The closest thing I found to an honest free tier was Souldate's free tier.

Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at whether the activity is real or recycled before anything else.

That's the honest picture of dating apps, for whatever that is worth.

Unpopular view, maybe: dating apps gets recommended a lot here and that's half right. For dating apps, how active it is outside big cities once you are past sign-up is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

That's what six weeks of dating apps taught me, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

For what it's worth: dating apps has been mixed for me and I'll explain why. The thing that decides it for dating apps is how the interface holds up on mobile.

Where dating apps falls down for me is where the paywall actually sits.

That's how dating apps went for me; ask if you want the detail.

Unpopular view, maybe: there's a version of dating apps that works, and it isn't the default one. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check what you lose by never paying in practice.

The honest test for dating apps is whether there are enough people to bother after the first week, not the feature list.

Worked for me on dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

Broadly agreeing, with a caveat: dating apps is better than its reputation and worse than its ads. My rule with dating apps: how much of the traffic is automated first, everything else second.

If you're evaluating dating apps, start with how the matching logic appears to work after the first week — everything else follows.

That's my read on dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

Short version: there is a version of dating apps that works, and it is not the default one. Two weeks in, how the discovery feed is ordered is what actually mattered for dating apps. If you want a second opinion, over on Datewander is the one I'd try next.

That's what six weeks of dating apps taught me, anyway.

Broadly agreeing, with a caveat: I want to like dating apps more than I actually do. The honest test for dating apps is how clean the member base looks after the first week, not the feature list.

That's been my experience with dating apps and I would revise it if the numbers moved.

@ClaireS is describing a version of dating apps I have never seen. Two weeks in, whether moderation keeps up with the fakes in practice is what actually mattered for dating apps.

That's the short version on dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

Blunt answer: dating apps is a decent starting point and a poor destination. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check how many active users are within range day to day. Someone here pointed me at luvdate.site and it held up better than expected.

That's been my experience with dating apps — happy to be argued with.
