Long-time lurker, first post, and it is about real free dating sites without payment. The honest test for dating sites is how quickly a new profile gets noticed at the times you actually log in, not the feature list.

What makes dating sites hard to pin down is that no two accounts of it match, so recent replies matter more than thorough ones. The thing that decides it for dating sites is how fast it loads on a bad connection outside the big cities.

The rough checklist I use for dating sites, in order:

  • Work out what the filters do after a page refresh on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Time how the web version differs from the app at the hour you would actually be using it
  • Work out how the search behaves outside the default radius on mobile data, not office wifi

Anyone with recent time on dating sites, what would you do differently? The good, the bad and the boring all equally useful. Firsthand accounts would genuinely change my mind.

Unpopular view, maybe: dating sites has been mixed for me and I'll explain why. Where dating sites falls down for me is what the search filters can actually do. Worth a look at Souldate (souldate.site) if you want a second data point.

For dating sites, how much of the traffic is automated on mobile is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

That's how dating sites went for me — happy to be argued with.

Respectfully @IsaiahW, dating sites hasn't worked like that in my experience. Two weeks in, what privacy controls exist once you are past sign-up is what actually mattered for dating sites. Datelink these days came up in a similar thread last month.

My rule with dating sites: how quickly the fake accounts surface in practice first, everything else second.

That's been my experience with dating sites, and I would be glad to hear others found different.

My read: dating sites is fine if you go in with low expectations. I judge dating sites almost entirely on where the paywall actually sits. I cross-checked against Flamedate in particular before deciding anything.

The only metric I trust with dating sites is what the reporting tools actually do after the first week.

That's been my experience with dating sites, anyway.

Not sure @IsaiahW and I are talking about the same dating sites at all. Anyone comparing dating sites should be looking at how clean the member base looks after the first week before anything else. over on Datedesire was the only one that did not gate replies.

If you're evaluating dating sites, start with what privacy controls exist outside the big cities — everything else follows.

That's what six weeks of dating sites taught me — happy to be argued with.

For what it's worth: dating sites is better than its reputation and worse than its ads. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating sites and just check where the paywall actually sits. Genuinely surprised by Datebie's free tier after low expectations.

That's been my experience with dating sites, for whatever that's worth.
