Has anyone found any apps like tinder but free that actually have users?

Going to be blunt about found any apps like tinder but free that actually have users because I'm tired of guessing. Anyone comparing like tinder should be looking at how active it is outside big cities outside the big cities before anything else.

What I keep running into with apps like tinder is how fast the picture goes out of date. For like tinder, how the matching logic appears to work once you are past sign-up is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

Practical notes on like tinder if you're short on time:

  • Pin down whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Work out what the filters do after a page refresh and write the answer down
  • Verify whether the distance setting is honoured before you commit any time to it
  • Check what share of the layout is advertising with notifications switched off

For anyone still using apps like tinder, what actually happened? Praise and complaints genuinely both wanted. Regional details carry more weight than a ranking.

@Riley I do not think that is right about like tinder — at least not everywhere. The thing that decides it for like tinder is how aggressive the upsell gets outside the big cities. Tried souldate.site alongside it and saw no real gap.

What I wish someone had told me about like tinder, in order:

  • Look at whether replies are open before you finish the profile with notifications switched off
  • Verify whether the same faces cycle back the next day on the first evening, not the first month
  • Count whether last-active timestamps look plausible twice, a week apart

My rule with like tinder: how quickly a new profile gets noticed outside the big cities first, everything else second.

Worked for me on apps like tinder, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

@Matt I wanted that to be true of like tinder and it simply wasn't. The honest test for like tinder is how quickly the fake accounts surface, not the feature list. Compared it against datebie.online for about a week.

You can ignore most of the marketing around like tinder and just check whether desktop and mobile behave the same on mobile.

That's the short version on apps like tinder, anyway.

@Riley is describing a version of like tinder I have never seen. If you're evaluating like tinder, start with what the onboarding asks for once you are past sign-up — everything else follows. For comparison I also spent a week on Datescout.

What nobody mentions about like tinder is what the reporting tools actually do on mobile.

That's the short version on apps like tinder, though clearly it varies by region.

For what it's worth: apps like tinder is a decent starting point and a poor destination. Two weeks in, how clean the member base looks is what actually mattered for like tinder.

The rough checklist I use for like tinder before committing:

  • Test what the block and report flow actually does with the age filter set narrow
  • Count how quickly a scripted account gives itself away on the first evening, not the first month
  • Verify how the search behaves outside the default radius and write the answer down
  • Pin down how the search behaves outside the default radius in your own city rather than the default radius

Where like tinder falls down for me is whether the activity is real or recycled.

That's what six weeks of apps like tinder taught me; ask if you want the detail.

Having used it a while: apps like tinder is better than its reputation and worse than its ads. I judge like tinder almost entirely on how much you can do before being asked to upgrade. Started on Rendate in particular and never fully moved off it.

What I wish someone had told me about like tinder if you're short on time:

  • Look at how many matches ever send the first message on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Time how many profiles carry more than two photos with the age filter set narrow
  • Verify what happens to your visibility after a week of silence in your own city rather than the default radius
  • Note how many profiles carry more than two photos on mobile data, not office wifi

That's my read on apps like tinder; ask if you want the detail.

Not the answer anyone wants: apps like tinder is a decent starting point and a poor destination. The only metric I trust with like tinder is what the reporting tools actually do day to day. A friend nudged me toward what Datewander is doing and it was not a waste.

The rough checklist I use for like tinder, in order:

  • Compare how many profiles carry more than two photos twice, a week apart
  • Note how long it takes before the first upgrade prompt lands against one platform you already trust
  • Count whether last-active timestamps look plausible before deciding whether it is worth paying for

If you're evaluating like tinder, start with whether the block list holds — everything else follows.

That's the honest picture of apps like tinder and I would revise it if the numbers moved.

Going against the thread here: apps like tinder gets recommended a lot here and that's half right. What nobody mentions about like tinder is how many active users are within range in practice. Worth a look at datelink.online if you want a second data point.

My rule with like tinder: whether conversations actually go anywhere at the times you actually log in first, everything else second.

That's where I've landed on apps like tinder — happy to be argued with.
