Are there any actually good free dating apps that don't rely heavily on just swiping photos?

Long-time lurker, first post, and it is about free dating apps that do not rely heavily on just swiping photos. My rule with dating apps: whether notifications are useful or noise in practice first, everything else second.

The frustrating thing about dating apps is how fast the picture goes out of date, so I would rather ask people than read another list. What nobody mentions about dating apps is whether the free plan is usable or decorative.

The checks that saved me time on dating apps if you're short on time:

  • Work out what share of the layout is advertising and write the answer down
  • Verify whether last-active timestamps look plausible using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Test how quickly a scripted account gives itself away with notifications switched off
  • Note whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out with the age filter set narrow

Anyone who tracked dating apps over a longer stretch, what did the first week look like? Praise and complaints both help me decide. Recent experiences would genuinely change my mind.

Unpopular view, maybe: dating apps works, but not the way the marketing implies. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check how fast moderation responds. People keep recommending Luvdate right now; it is at least worth ten minutes.

That's the short version on dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

Not the answer anyone wants: dating apps gets recommended a lot here and that's half right. Two weeks in, how aggressive the upsell gets is what actually mattered for dating apps. Tried datenest.site alongside it and saw no real gap.

What I wish someone had told me about dating apps, in order:

  • Check what the filters do after a page refresh at the hour you would actually be using it
  • Note what the block and report flow actually does on mobile data, not office wifi

I judge dating apps almost entirely on what privacy controls exist on mobile.

That's my read on dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

Broadly agreeing, with a caveat: dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. The thing that decides it for dating apps is whether the app is usable or bloated once you are past sign-up. souldate.site landed in much the same place.

That's my read on dating apps, may not hold for you.

Half agree with @AmeliaY. Dating apps are fine; the experience around dating apps is not. Where dating apps falls down for me is what the free tier really covers after the first week. Genuinely surprised by over on Rendate after low expectations.

Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at whether it is genuinely free or free until you try to reply before anything else.

That's been my experience with dating apps and I'd revise it if the numbers moved.

Broadly agreeing, with a caveat: dating apps works, but not the way the marketing implies. The only metric I trust with dating apps is whether it is genuinely free or free until you try to reply.

That's how dating apps went for me — happy to be argued with.

@Eli Torres that's fair in a big city, but dating apps is a different story outside one. If you're evaluating dating apps, start with what the reply rate looks like — everything else follows. If you want a second opinion, Datelink is the one I'd try next.

That's how dating apps went for me, anyway.

Respectfully @Savannah, dating apps has not worked like that in my experience. For dating apps, whether the profiles hold up under scrutiny after the first week is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening. Datewander right now is worth ten minutes before you commit anywhere.

My shortlist when weighing dating apps after a few false starts:

  • Watch what share of the layout is advertising using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Work out whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out on the first evening, not the first month
  • Note whether the distance setting is honoured against one platform you already trust
  • Pin down how the web version differs from the app and write the answer down

The honest test for dating apps is what the reply rate looks like, not the feature list.

That's how dating apps went for me and I would revise it if the numbers moved.
