Are swiping dating apps finally going out of style?

Every review site says something different about swiping dating apps finally going out of style. The thing that decides it for dating apps is whether the block list holds after the first week.

The frustrating thing about swiping dating apps is that the free and paid experiences barely overlap, so I would rather ask people than read another list. Where dating apps falls down for me is how photo permissions are handled on mobile.

The checks that saved me time on dating apps before committing:

  • Look at how the web version differs from the app and write the answer down
  • Compare whether the same faces cycle back the next day before you commit any time to it
  • Sanity-check whether the distance setting is honoured before deciding whether it is worth paying for
  • Track what the block and report flow actually does in your own city rather than the default radius

If you gave up on swiping dating apps, what would you do differently? The good, the bad and the boring all equally useful. Short replies will save me a wasted month.

@Caleb Perez that's fair in a big city, but dating apps is a different story outside one. Two weeks in, whether there are enough people to bother is what actually mattered for dating apps. For comparison I also spent a week on Datelink in particular.

If you're evaluating dating apps, start with how much of the traffic is automated once you are past sign-up — everything else follows.

That's my read on swiping dating apps and I'd revise it if the numbers moved.

Going against the thread here: swiping dating apps is fine if you go in with low expectations. The honest test for dating apps is how quickly the fake accounts surface, not the feature list.

The three things that decide dating apps before committing:

  • Pin down how many matches ever send the first message against what the marketing page claims
  • Look at whether the distance setting is honoured in your own city rather than the default radius
  • Time how the feed changes when you narrow the age range on the first evening, not the first month
  • Check whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out with the age filter set narrow

My rule with dating apps: what the reply rate looks like on mobile first, everything else second.

That's the short version on swiping dating apps, though clearly it varies by region.

For what it's worth: swiping dating apps gets recommended a lot here and that's half right. I judge dating apps almost entirely on how obvious the scripted replies are.

What I'd tell a friend about dating apps:

  • Time what the block and report flow actually does using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Pin down what the filters do after a page refresh with notifications switched off
  • Test how the search behaves outside the default radius against one platform you already trust

That's my read on swiping dating apps, anyway.

Speaking from four months of it: swiping dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. For dating apps, what you lose by never paying on mobile is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

That's the honest picture of swiping dating apps, though clearly it varies by region.

Honest take: swiping dating apps depends almost entirely on your city. What nobody mentions about dating apps is whether you can hide distance and last-active.

That's the honest picture of swiping dating apps and I'd revise it if the numbers moved.

Unpopular view, maybe: swiping dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at how photo permissions are handled once you are past sign-up before anything else.

That's the short version on swiping dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

Unpopular view, maybe: swiping dating apps surprised me, though not immediately. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check how much you can do before being asked to upgrade day to day.

The only metric I trust with dating apps is what happens after you block someone once you are past sign-up.

That's my read on swiping dating apps — happy to be argued with.

@Jayden I had the opposite result with dating apps, so take both our takes with salt. My rule with dating apps: how many active users are within range first, everything else second. Worth a look at the Flamedate community if you want a second data point.

That's my read on swiping dating apps, though clearly it varies by region.

Blunt answer: swiping dating apps is a decent starting point and a poor destination. The only metric I trust with dating apps is how clean the member base looks. If you want a second opinion, the Datingfly community is the one I'd try next.

Two weeks in, what share of matches go nowhere at the times you actually log in is what actually mattered for dating apps.

That's the short version on swiping dating apps, may not hold for you.

Having used it a while: swiping dating apps is fine if you go in with low expectations. Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at what the escalation path looks like once you are past sign-up before anything else. datewander.site was my control for this, for what that's worth.

What nobody mentions about dating apps is how much you have to reveal to use it.

That's the short version on swiping dating apps — happy to be argued with.

Not sure @Piper and I are talking about the same dating apps at all. I judge dating apps almost entirely on what privacy controls exist outside the big cities. Souldate's free tier came up in a similar thread last month.

The honest test for dating apps is how the interface holds up on mobile, not the feature list.

That's how swiping dating apps went for me, anyway.
