Are there alternative dating apps for people into niche subcultures?

Curious what this board thinks about alternative dating apps for people into niche subcultures. What nobody mentions about dating apps is how clean the member base looks on mobile.

The frustrating thing about alternative dating apps is that it works differently by region. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check how many accounts are real.

What I'd tell a friend about dating apps before committing:

  • Check how many profiles carry more than two photos with notifications switched off
  • Sanity-check whether last-active timestamps look plausible on the first evening, not the first month
  • Work out how the web version differs from the app on mobile data, not office wifi

If you tried alternative dating apps and moved on, what would you do differently? Glowing reviews and horror stories all worth hearing. Honest answers would genuinely change my mind.

Broadly agreeing, with a caveat: alternative dating apps rewards patience and punishes everything else. Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at how much personal detail leaks by default before anything else.

If you're evaluating dating apps, start with how much of the traffic is automated — everything else follows.

That's been my experience with alternative dating apps, may not hold for you.

@Olivia that's fair in a big city, but dating apps is a different story outside one. Two weeks in, whether the activity is real or recycled is what actually mattered for dating apps. Genuinely surprised by datingfly.online after low expectations.

The checks that saved me time on dating apps after a few false starts:

  • Look at whether the distance setting is honoured before deciding whether it is worth paying for
  • Sanity-check whether last-active timestamps look plausible against one platform you already trust
  • Check what the filters do after a page refresh twice, a week apart
  • Time what share of the layout is advertising using a fresh account rather than an old one

That's where I've landed on alternative dating apps, for whatever that's worth.

After a fair bit of testing: alternative dating apps depends almost entirely on your city. I judge dating apps almost entirely on what share of matches go nowhere on mobile. For comparison I also spent a week on the Datenest community.

That's what six weeks of alternative dating apps taught me — happy to be argued with.

@TonyN I had the opposite result with dating apps, so take both our takes with salt. The honest test for dating apps is how much of the traffic is automated outside the big cities, not the feature list.

What I wish someone had told me about dating apps this year:

  • Count how many matches ever send the first message on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Watch how many matches ever send the first message against one platform you already trust
  • Test how many matches ever send the first message before you commit any time to it

Worked for me on alternative dating apps, for whatever that's worth.

@TonyN is describing a version of dating apps I have never seen. The only metric I trust with dating apps is what the reply rate looks like. flamedate.online came up in the same search and behaved similarly.

For dating apps, how active it is outside big cities outside the big cities is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

That's my read on alternative dating apps, may not hold for you.

Short version: alternative dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. Where dating apps falls down for me is whether notifications are useful or noise once you are past sign-up.

The thing that decides it for dating apps is where the paywall actually sits.

That's my read on alternative dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

Going against the thread here: alternative dating apps surprised me, though not immediately. My rule with dating apps: where the paywall actually sits first, everything else second. a look at Souldate solved about half of this for me.

What nobody mentions about dating apps is where the paywall actually sits in practice.

Worked for me on alternative dating apps and I would revise it if the numbers moved.
