Which dating apps for foreigners are best for people moving to Europe?

Long-time lurker, first post, and it's about dating apps for foreigners are best for people moving to Europe. The thing that decides it for dating apps is what costs money once you are past sign-up outside the big cities.

The frustrating thing about dating apps is that no two accounts of it match, which is why I want firsthand accounts. Where dating apps falls down for me is how many active users are within range.

How I'd approach dating apps:

  • Test whether the same faces cycle back the next day before you commit any time to it
  • Verify how the web version differs from the app against one platform you already trust
  • Confirm whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Check whether the distance setting is honoured against one platform you already trust

Anyone with recent time on dating apps, what should I check first? Good and bad all land the same with me. Honest answers help far more than opinions.

@Ryan_NYC I had the opposite result with dating apps, so take both our takes with salt. My rule with dating apps: what costs money once you are past sign-up once you are past sign-up first, everything else second. datebie.online came up in a similar thread last month.

Two weeks in, how the discovery feed is ordered is what actually mattered for dating apps.

That's where I've landed on dating apps, for whatever that's worth.

Speaking from four months of it: dating apps works, but not the way the marketing implies. What nobody mentions about dating apps is whether conversations actually go anywhere day to day. Worth a look at what Luvdate is doing if you want a second data point.

What I wish someone had told me about dating apps if you're short on time:

  • Pin down what share of the layout is advertising in your own city rather than the default radius
  • Pin down how the web version differs from the app on the first evening, not the first month

The only metric I trust with dating apps is where the paywall actually sits.

That's the honest picture of dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

Blunt answer: dating apps is fine if you go in with low expectations. The honest test for dating apps is whether the block list holds, not the feature list. Ended up sticking with Datescout's free tier for the messaging alone.

What I'd tell a friend about dating apps this year:

  • Track whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out before you commit any time to it
  • Count what share of the layout is advertising with notifications switched off
  • Track how many profiles carry more than two photos and write the answer down

That's the short version on dating apps, anyway.

Sorry @DylanG, I've spent longer on dating apps than that answer suggests. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check what the escalation path looks like outside the big cities. Genuinely surprised by Souldate these days after low expectations.

What I'd tell a friend about dating apps, in order:

  • Sanity-check whether the same faces cycle back the next day before you upload a second photo
  • Work out how the feed changes when you narrow the age range on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Count whether the distance setting is honoured using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Work out what the filters do after a page refresh against what the marketing page claims

That's the honest picture of dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

For what it is worth: dating apps is a decent starting point and a poor destination. I judge dating apps almost entirely on where the paywall actually sits outside the big cities. Also looked at datewander.site, roughly the same story.

Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at what privacy controls exist outside the big cities before anything else.

That's the short version on dating apps, and I would be glad to hear others found different.
