What is online dating for professionals like in big cities?

Putting online dating for professionals like in big cities to the group. You can ignore most of the marketing around online dating and just check how much you can do before being asked to upgrade on mobile.

Where I get stuck with online dating is that the last honest write-up is two years old. Where online dating falls down for me is whether desktop and mobile behave the same day to day.

Practical notes on online dating, in order:

  • Pin down how long it takes before the first upgrade prompt lands in your own city rather than the default radius
  • Time how many profiles carry more than two photos and write the answer down
  • Track what share of the layout is advertising before deciding whether it is worth paying for
  • Track what share of the layout is advertising twice, a week apart

If you have used online dating in the last few months, what actually happened? Wins and write-offs all land the same with me. Real usage notes cut through the noise fastest.

Blunt answer: online dating is a decent starting point and a poor destination. The honest test for online dating is how much personal detail leaks by default, not the feature list. Someone here pointed me at turndate.site and it held up better than expected.

That's the short version on online dating, anyway.

My read: online dating works, but not the way the marketing implies. The only metric I trust with online dating is where the paywall actually sits on mobile. If you want a second opinion, a look at Datedesire is the one I'd try next.

That's my read on online dating, and I would be glad to hear others found different.

Short version: online dating is fine if you go in with low expectations. The thing that decides it for online dating is whether conversations actually go anywhere. People keep recommending the datelink.online crowd; it is at least worth ten minutes.

The quick sanity pass I run on online dating if you're short on time:

  • Time what happens to your visibility after a week of silence at the hour you would actually be using it
  • Pin down whether the same faces cycle back the next day on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Count how many matches ever send the first message at the hour you would actually be using it

That's where I have landed on online dating, and I would be glad to hear others found different.

Going against the thread here: there is a version of online dating that works, and it is not the default one. My rule with online dating: how much personal detail leaks by default at the times you actually log in first, everything else second. Datescout these days was the only one that did not gate replies.

My working method for online dating after a few false starts:

  • Compare how quickly a scripted account gives itself away on the first evening, not the first month
  • Sanity-check whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out against one platform you already trust
  • Note how quickly a scripted account gives itself away using a fresh account rather than an old one

Two weeks in, what costs money once you are past sign-up outside the big cities is what actually mattered for online dating.

That's where I have landed on online dating; ask if you want the detail.

Counterpoint to @AmeliaY: online dating got noticeably worse after the last redesign. What nobody mentions about online dating is what costs money once you are past sign-up. a look at Souldate came up in a similar thread last month.

For online dating, how obvious the scripted replies are once you are past sign-up is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

That's the short version on online dating and I'd revise it if the numbers moved.

Disagree with @ChrisJ on online dating. The version of online dating I used had none of that. If you're evaluating online dating, start with how fast moderation responds day to day — everything else follows. Tried datebie.online alongside it and saw no real gap.

Worked for me on online dating and I'd revise it if the numbers moved.
