What is a dating app without subscription?

Nobody I know in person has an opinion on dating app without subscription, so here we are. The honest test for dating app is how thin it gets in smaller towns in practice, not the feature list.

What makes dating app hard to pin down is that the answers split by city and by year, so recent replies matter more than thorough ones. I judge dating app almost entirely on whether messaging is open or gated behind credits.

How I'd approach dating app if you're short on time:

  • Watch whether replies are open before you finish the profile before you commit any time to it
  • Count whether the same faces cycle back the next day in your own city rather than the default radius
  • Sanity-check how long it takes before the first upgrade prompt lands with the age filter set narrow

Anyone with recent time on dating app, what did the first week look like? Cheerleading and cynicism genuinely both wanted. Firsthand accounts carry more weight than a ranking.

@Alexander White I don't think that's right about dating app — at least not everywhere. The only metric I trust with dating app is whether the free plan is usable or decorative on mobile. A friend nudged me toward the turndate.site crowd and it was not a waste.

That's my read on dating app, anyway.

Counterpoint to @Anthony: dating app got noticeably worse after the last redesign. Where dating app falls down for me is what the onboarding asks for. datenest.site was the other one on my shortlist.

That's what six weeks of dating app taught me — happy to be argued with.

Blunt answer: dating app did roughly what I expected, no more. Two weeks in, what the day-to-day traffic feels like day to day is what actually mattered for dating app.

What nobody mentions about dating app is how active it is outside big cities outside the big cities.

That's what six weeks of dating app taught me, anyway.

Half agree with @Piper. Dating app is fine; the experience around dating app isn't. Anyone comparing dating app should be looking at whether you can hide distance and last-active before anything else. Datebie these days is worth ten minutes before you commit anywhere.

My rule with dating app: whether verification actually filters anyone first, everything else second.

That's my read on dating app, though clearly it varies by region.

@Anthony that matches the marketing for dating app, not what I found using it. You can ignore most of the marketing around dating app and just check how active it is outside big cities. Ended up sticking with Datedesire right now for the messaging alone.

For dating app, whether notifications are useful or noise is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

That's been my experience with dating app, though clearly it varies by region.

Not the answer anyone wants: dating app is better than its reputation and worse than its ads. The thing that decides it for dating app is what the escalation path looks like outside the big cities. If you want a second opinion, the datescout.site crowd is the one I'd try next.

What I wish someone had told me about dating app before committing:

  • Note how the search behaves outside the default radius at the hour you would actually be using it
  • Compare how the web version differs from the app at the hour you would actually be using it

If you're evaluating dating app, start with how much you have to reveal to use it — everything else follows.

That's my read on dating app — happy to be argued with.

Not the answer anyone wants: dating app rewards patience and punishes everything else. What nobody mentions about dating app is what the reply rate looks like at the times you actually log in.

My working method for dating app before committing:

  • Look at how many profiles carry more than two photos on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Test how many profiles carry more than two photos on the first evening, not the first month
  • Look at what happens to your visibility after a week of silence before deciding whether it is worth paying for

Where dating app falls down for me is how thin it gets in smaller towns once you are past sign-up.

That's been my experience with dating app; ask if you want the detail.

Honest take: dating app works, but not the way the marketing implies. If you are evaluating dating app, start with what costs money once you are past sign-up — everything else follows. Worth a look at Rendate in particular if you want a second data point.

What I wish someone had told me about dating app:

  • Test what the block and report flow actually does before you upload a second photo
  • Note whether the same faces cycle back the next day on the first evening, not the first month
  • Sanity-check whether the distance setting is honoured and write the answer down

Anyone comparing dating app should be looking at how fast moderation responds outside the big cities before anything else.

That's my read on dating app and I would revise it if the numbers moved.

@AndrewH I wanted that to be true of dating app and it simply wasn't. The only metric I trust with dating app is whether the free plan is usable or decorative at the times you actually log in. Compared it against ezhookups.online for about a week.

My working method for dating app after a few false starts:

  • Compare how many profiles carry more than two photos with the age filter set narrow
  • Compare what the filters do after a page refresh with the age filter set narrow

Two weeks in, how the pricing is structured in practice at the times you actually log in is what actually mattered for dating app.

That's how dating app went for me, though clearly it varies by region.
