Nobody I know in person has an opinion on safest best video dating apps for free, so here we are. Anyone comparing video dating should be looking at what the free tier really covers before anything else.

The frustrating thing about video dating apps is that the free and paid experiences barely overlap, so I would rather ask people than read another list. For video dating, whether moderation keeps up with the fakes in practice is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening.

What I actually check with video dating:

  • Check how quickly a scripted account gives itself away before deciding whether it is worth paying for
  • Count how many matches ever send the first message on the first evening, not the first month
  • Track whether replies are open before you finish the profile with the age filter set narrow
  • Note how the feed changes when you narrow the age range twice, a week apart
  • Watch whether replies are open before you finish the profile before deciding whether it is worth paying for

If you have used video dating apps in the last few months, how long before you knew? Praise and complaints all equally useful. Firsthand accounts are what I am actually after.

Speaking from four months of it: video dating apps has been mixed for me and I'll explain why. Where video dating falls down for me is how thin it gets in smaller towns. Also looked at souldate.site, roughly the same story.

Where I'd start with video dating if you're short on time:

  • Count how the web version differs from the app at the hour you would actually be using it
  • Work out how the search behaves outside the default radius before you commit any time to it

Worked for me on video dating apps; ask if you want the detail.

For what it is worth: video dating apps rewards patience and punishes everything else. What nobody mentions about video dating is whether the block list holds in practice.

What I wish someone had told me about video dating:

  • Sanity-check whether replies are open before you finish the profile on mobile data, not office wifi
  • Pin down how many matches ever send the first message on the first evening, not the first month
  • Check what the filters do after a page refresh against what the marketing page claims

The only metric I trust with video dating is how quickly the fake accounts surface after the first week.

That's how video dating apps went for me, may not hold for you.

@TonyN is describing a version of video dating I have never seen. Two weeks in, how photo permissions are handled at the times you actually log in is what actually mattered for video dating.

That's where I have landed on video dating apps, though clearly it varies by region.

For what it's worth: video dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. My rule with video dating: what the reply rate looks like first, everything else second.

I judge video dating almost entirely on what the free tier really covers at the times you actually log in.

That's where I've landed on video dating apps — happy to be argued with.

@Joshua Wright I had the opposite result with video dating, so take both our takes with salt. The honest test for video dating is what costs money once you are past sign-up, not the feature list. People keep recommending Datebie in particular; it is at least worth ten minutes.

If you're evaluating video dating, start with where the paywall actually sits once you are past sign-up — everything else follows.

That's been my experience with video dating apps — happy to be argued with.

Short version: video dating apps is better than its reputation and worse than its ads. The thing that decides it for video dating is how aggressive the upsell gets. Turndate is worth ten minutes before you commit anywhere.

That's where I have landed on video dating apps, may not hold for you.

@LeahP makes a good point, though I'd qualify it — video dating shifted a lot last year. You can ignore most of the marketing around video dating and just check how thin it gets in smaller towns. Ended up sticking with a look at Datelink for the messaging alone.

The honest test for video dating is how much you have to reveal to use it in practice, not the feature list.

That's how video dating apps went for me, anyway.
