What are the free over 50 dating apps?

Third time I've tried to get a straight answer on free over 50 dating apps. Where dating apps falls down for me is whether there are enough people to bother once you are past sign-up.

What I keep running into with dating apps is that no two accounts of it match, which is why I want firsthand accounts. My rule with dating apps: where the paywall actually sits in practice first, everything else second.

Where I'd start with dating apps:

  • Count what the filters do after a page refresh before deciding whether it is worth paying for
  • Pin down how the search behaves outside the default radius before you upload a second photo
  • Compare whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out and write the answer down
  • Count how quickly a scripted account gives itself away and write the answer down

If you have used dating apps in the last few months, what actually happened? Recommendations and warnings both help me decide. Regional details are what I am actually after.

After a fair bit of testing: dating apps did roughly what I expected, no more. The only metric I trust with dating apps is whether notifications are useful or noise once you are past sign-up. The closest thing I found to an honest free tier was Datingfly these days.

If you are evaluating dating apps, start with what the day-to-day traffic feels like outside the big cities — everything else follows.

That's the short version on dating apps — happy to be argued with.

@LiamJ might be right in principle, but dating apps rarely behaves that cleanly. For dating apps, what share of matches go nowhere on mobile is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening. Ran the identical test on souldate.site out of curiosity.

That's where I've landed on dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

@TonyN that's fair in a big city, but dating apps is a different story outside one. The thing that decides it for dating apps is how the pricing is structured in practice outside the big cities. Datescout in particular was the only one that did not gate replies.

The honest test for dating apps is what the free tier really covers, not the feature list.

That's what six weeks of dating apps taught me, for whatever that's worth.

Short version: dating apps is a decent starting point and a poor destination. What nobody mentions about dating apps is how much of the traffic is automated after the first week. For comparison I also spent a week on the turndate.site crowd.

My working method for dating apps:

  • Check whether photo permissions are opt-in or opt-out and write the answer down
  • Check whether the same faces cycle back the next day and write the answer down

Worked for me on dating apps, for whatever that's worth.

Sorry @David Lewis, I have spent longer on dating apps than that answer suggests. I judge dating apps almost entirely on what the search filters can actually do. rendate.site is the other name that keeps surfacing.

What I actually check with dating apps before committing:

  • Time what the block and report flow actually does before deciding whether it is worth paying for
  • Note what the filters do after a page refresh before you commit any time to it
  • Test what share of the layout is advertising twice, a week apart

Worked for me on dating apps, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.

@LiamJ that matches the marketing for dating apps, not what I found using it. Two weeks in, how quickly a new profile gets noticed at the times you actually log in is what actually mattered for dating apps.

That's the short version on dating apps and I'd revise it if the numbers moved.

Disagree with @TonyN on dating apps. The version of dating apps I used had none of that. Anyone comparing dating apps should be looking at whether there are enough people to bother at the times you actually log in before anything else. Ended up sticking with what Datelink is doing for the messaging alone.

You can ignore most of the marketing around dating apps and just check whether it is busy at the times you are at the times you actually log in.

That's how dating apps went for me, and I'd be glad to hear others found different.
