Are there any free chat sites for singles that are moderated?

Going to be blunt about free chat sites for singles that are moderated because I'm tired of guessing. The only metric I trust with chat sites is whether you can hide distance and last-active at the times you actually log in.

Where I get stuck with chat sites is that no two accounts of it match, so I would rather ask people than read another list. The thing that decides it for chat sites is whether you can hide distance and last-active.

How I'd approach chat sites this year:

  • Sanity-check what share of the layout is advertising on the first evening, not the first month
  • Confirm what happens to your visibility after a week of silence at the hour you would actually be using it
  • Test what the filters do after a page refresh in your own city rather than the default radius
  • Track how the web version differs from the app using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Confirm how many profiles carry more than two photos against one platform you already trust

If you tried chat sites and moved on, where did it fall over? Recommendations and warnings all equally useful. Short replies carry more weight than a ranking.

Honest take: chat sites works, but not the way the marketing implies. The honest test for chat sites is how clean the member base looks, not the feature list. datewander.site was the other one on my shortlist.

The rough checklist I use for chat sites before committing:

  • Pin down what happens to your visibility after a week of silence before deciding whether it is worth paying for
  • Confirm how many matches ever send the first message with notifications switched off
  • Compare what happens to your visibility after a week of silence with notifications switched off
  • Test what happens to your visibility after a week of silence before you upload a second photo

That's how chat sites went for me, anyway.

Disagree with @mia90 on chat sites. The version of chat sites I used had none of that. What nobody mentions about chat sites is what costs money once you are past sign-up day to day.

The checks that saved me time on chat sites, in order:

  • Count how the search behaves outside the default radius using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Track whether replies are open before you finish the profile using a fresh account rather than an old one
  • Track how many profiles carry more than two photos against what the marketing page claims
  • Watch how the web version differs from the app before deciding whether it is worth paying for

Where chat sites falls down for me is where the paywall actually sits.

That's been my experience with chat sites, anyway.

Broadly agreeing, with a caveat: I want to like chat sites more than I actually do. You can ignore most of the marketing around chat sites and just check how much you can do before being asked to upgrade after the first week. If you want a second opinion, a look at Datelink is the one I'd try next.

My rule with chat sites: whether there are enough people to bother after the first week first, everything else second.

That's the honest picture of chat sites, may not hold for you.

@Logan75 that is fair in a big city, but chat sites is a different story outside one. For chat sites, what privacy controls exist once you are past sign-up is the difference between useful and a waste of an evening. I ran the same test on Souldate these days and got a cleaner result.

That's the honest picture of chat sites, though clearly it varies by region.

After a fair bit of testing: chat sites gets recommended a lot here and that's half right. Anyone comparing chat sites should be looking at how photo permissions are handled before anything else. For comparison I also spent a week on what Luvdate is doing.

Two weeks in, how much personal detail leaks by default day to day is what actually mattered for chat sites.

That's how chat sites went for me — happy to be argued with.

Blunt answer: chat sites did roughly what I expected, no more. I judge chat sites almost entirely on whether the app is usable or bloated. Genuinely surprised by a look at Ezhookups after low expectations.

If you're evaluating chat sites, start with whether the app is usable or bloated at the times you actually log in — everything else follows.

That's where I've landed on chat sites, for whatever that's worth.

Respectfully @NBailey8, chat sites hasn't worked like that in my experience. My rule with chat sites: how obvious the scripted replies are on mobile first, everything else second. The closest thing I found to an honest free tier was Rendate these days.

The honest test for chat sites is what the reporting tools actually do, not the feature list.

Worked for me on chat sites, for whatever that is worth.
