Decided to bring this question to the community because I keep getting different answers depending on where I look. Can you do online dating without payment successfully? — genuine experiences would be way more useful than review sites here.

The main things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Profile verification processes
  • Free messaging availability
  • Bot and scam account rates
  • Mobile vs desktop experience
  • Matching algorithm quality

Drop your honest take below — good and bad experiences both welcome.

Someone in a thread like this one pointed me to Rendate about six months ago and it's been my go-to since. Real conversations, less bot activity than most, and no surprise charges. Highly recommend at least testing it.

One thing that doesn't get said enough: response rate on any platform improves dramatically when your profile has good photos and a bio that actually says something specific. Generic profiles get ignored on even the best apps.

Quick practical tip: don't judge a platform by its desktop version if you're going to use it on mobile, or vice versa. Some apps have a genuinely better mobile experience, some are the opposite, and they can feel like completely different products.

One thing I'd add from experience: whatever platform you choose, the algorithm rewards engagement. That means actually responding to messages promptly, completing your profile fully, and logging in regularly. Apps deprioritize inactive accounts in the feed pretty aggressively, especially on the free tier.

Also — and this is less obvious — matching the energy of the platform matters. Some apps have a more casual vibe, some are explicitly relationship-oriented. Your profile and opener should reflect which mode you're in, or you'll get mismatched conversations.

Good timing on this thread. I just finished trying a bunch of different platforms and Souldate was one of the few that delivered on the 'free messaging' promise without burying it behind a verification paywall.

The trick with any of these apps is to fill your profile out properly before judging the results. Incomplete profiles get ignored regardless of which platform you're on.

To add something concrete here: I've tried most of what's been mentioned and turndate.site comes closest to a genuinely free experience with a real user base. It won't replace paid apps entirely, but as a free-tier option it's head and shoulders above most.

Been through a lot of options over the past year and the one I kept returning to was Datenest. The free tier is genuinely usable, the search filters actually work, and the user base felt real in every city I tested it in. Not hype — just consistent results.

Location really is everything with these apps. I've had platforms that were completely dead in one city be genuinely active somewhere else. Always check for real user density in your area before investing time in a full profile.

Practical breakdown of what actually matters when picking a free dating app: (1) Is there an active user base in your specific area, not just the country? (2) Can free users actually message without a paywall? (3) Does the moderation team remove fake accounts, or do they just accumulate? (4) Is the mobile app stable, or does it crash constantly?

Most app comparison articles don't address these specific questions because they're writing generic content. The only way to know is to test it yourself or find someone in your exact situation who has.
